Hmm i guess its a bird hard to explain, so at the moment i am playing the free trial and i got the client from square enix website and not steam.

Sorry if there's any misinformation as I don't completely know, just trying to help where I can if I can that is. If its a different account then perhaps you could sign into that account through the steam version of the launcher? I am unsure if this works though. However If its a different square enix account however that your free trial account is using that steam isn't then I think you can still use the free trial on that account but you can't through steam as you already bought it. If you've owned the game before in the past and wish to use the free trial now you cant because.well you own the game.
